Friendship. There's many different ways one can define that word.
Someone you talk to once in your Spanish 3 class could be considered your friend. Or maybe that girl you played flute next to everyday for four years is a friend. But what about the boy who could read your thoughts and emotions just by being in the same room as you? Would you define them as a friend?
Hyukjae would. Kyuhyun had been everything to Hyukjae. He was able to talk Hyukjae out of any moods he found himself in, able to just know when Hyukjae's anger was about to blow and steered him out of the room.
"So what exactly did Heechul do to set you off now?"
Hyukjae scoffed. "You were in there."
"You think I actually paid attention to what you two were bickering about?" Kyuhyun shoved Hyukjae down into a chair, bending over so they could be eye to eye. "Just stay in here to calm down. You're not one to get mad like that."
Kyuhyun rubbed several small circles on Hyukjae's back before leaving the room, his trademark pencil tucked behind his ear.
That had been their last year of high school, but that didn't mean they stopped talking after graduation.
Text messages about silly little things that reminded them of each other, plans to meet up when Kyuhyun came back home to visit, and even the rare awkward confession about the romantic dreams they had about the other. Kyuhyun had gotten a full ride to the college of his choice, he was the smartest person Hyukjae had the honor to know. How they became so close, he would never know. But he was thankful for his luck everyday that he was able to talk to Kyuhyun.
Well, no. They became close the first few weeks of high school, when they each had a crush on the other and ended up dating for several weeks. Hyukjae, ever the prude, had kept Kyuhyun waiting for too long, and they ended the relationship as friends. (Neither got over the crush, neither truly moved on, neither would admit this.)
It wasn't until Hyukjae asked where Kyuhyun would be living when he left for college that he found out something that had been kept from him.
"I'll be moving in with my boyfriend. He's apartment hunting there as we speak."
"B-boyfriend? I didn't-"
"He just kind of... happened, you know?"
"Yeah." No. Hyukjae didn't know. He had never had a decent enough relationship after Kyuhyun to know what it was like to want to live with someone, to leave everything behind to be with someone. Hyukaje had only ever wanted Kyuhyun.
"You'll come visit me, right? When you get lonely and tired of being without me."
Hyukjae would nod, give Kyuhyun a quick hug before leaving his friend to finish packing. The hug would have been longer if he knew it was going to be the last.
Six months after Kyuhyun left, the messages stopped. Finally asking around, Hyukjae was informed that Kyuhyun's boyfriend was overly possessive and irrationally jealous of their friendship and had forced Kyuhyun to cut off ties with Hyukjae. The following year was difficult. The six months that followed that were even worse.
Hyukjae drove by Kyuhyun's parents' house weekly, constantly looking for the familiar shape of Kyuhyun's car. His life went on, though he tortured himself over things he might have done wrong to chase his friend away. He knew it wasn't really his fault, but four in the morning was nobody's friend.
An outing with friends found Hyukjae messing around with someone he had met only hours before, on his knees and taking the other man down his throat. He wasn't okay with it, but he wasn't against it. The only thing he thought while swallowing the man's release was, 'why couldn't it be Kyuhyun?'.
Dirty and ashamed of his actions, Hyukjae found himself walking down Kyuhyun's street the next day. He kicked a rock out of his path, his shoulders slouching forward. Crying. He had been crying on and off for the last full day, unable to get over his feelings for his friend, crush, he didn't even know what label to put on Kyuhyun anymore. He only knew that he needed the other man back in his life, if only to say a proper goodbye and possibly confess that he had never gotten over the other.
He stopped walking when a pair of boots came into his line of vision, one of the shoes standing on his rock. Slowly looking up, his eyes filled with tears again as Hyukjae took in the sight of Kyuhyun. His hair was longer, shaggy in some places and his awful skin had cleared up. The pencil was still behind Kyuhyun's ear and Hyukjae had never been happier to see that infuriating all-knowing smirk.
"I had a feeling that you needed me," Kyuhyun said his arms crossing over his chest. The smirk stayed but his eyes softened. "And... I might have needed you too."
His feet were moving before he knew what was going on, tears rolling quickly out of Hyukjae's eyes as he wrapped his arms tight around Kyuhyun's torso. He was still taller than Hyukjae, still smelled the same, and still was able to calm Hyukjae was a single touch.
Kyuhyun returned the hug, pulling Hyukjae in close and tight. "Anything to say?"
Hyukjae didn't miss the slight quiver in Kyuhyun's voice and he smiled into his friend's shirt, letting himself cry more. "I missed you, asshole."
"I missed you, too," Kyuhyun whispered into Hyukjae's hair, kissing the top of his head before pushng Hyukjae back a bit to take a good luck at him. "You're skinnier, I didn't think that was possible."
"Why are you back? No, where did you go and why-"
"He wasn't as great as I thought he would be, let's keep it at that." Kyuhyun paused, locking his eyes on Hyukjae's. "He wasn't you. No one is. The entire time I was away, I only thought of you, your laugh, how cheap you are, everything in my head was about you."
"So, are you... back?"
"You could say that."
They both smiled at each other as Kyuhyun grabbed Hyukjae's hand, pulling it up to his lips and pressing a light kiss onto Hyukjae's fingers. "Can we try 'us' again? I think it's about time to really test this out. First year of high school shouldn't count. And... I don't think you're as inexperienced as you used to be."
Hyukjae gasped. "How did you know?!"
"Hyukjae, you're still you. I can read you like a fucking book. Why don't we go out to eat, catch up, and you can tell me all about your sexual adventures."
"That shouldn't be plural, Kyuhyun. You can't come back and just be able to know what's gone on with me within the last year like you've been here the whole time-"
"If my assumptions are correct- and you know they always are- then I'd say this only happened within the last week. You have to tell me everything, too. You think I don't know when you're upset?"
"Fine, we'll go to eat. But you're paying." Hyukjae gripped Kyuhyun's hand tight in his and began to walk.
"Nothing's changed at all," Kyuhyun said with a smile.
Later that night, after a quick meal at the nearest burger joint, Hyukjae and Kyuhyun could be found in Kyuhyun's car. The two kissed, slow and sweet, and Hyukjae couldn't help but think that everything had changed. And it had all changed for the better. For the best even, when Kyuhyun snuck a hand down Hyukjae's pants and stroked him to completion.
Hyukjae stayed attached to Kyuhyun with his eyes shut tight, afraid to let go of the other as if he would disappear or it was all a cruel dream.
"Open your eyes, Hyukjae," Kyuhyun whispered against Hyukjae's neck, drawing a small path with his tongue. "I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere."
They held on to each other, Hyukjae's nails digging into Kyuhyun's back as Kyuhyun rocked into him. Finally, he thought, finally, this is how it should feel. He was finally with Kyuhyun, the only man he had ever truly loved and his best friend. Tears prickled Hyukjae eyes as he smiled into Kyuhyun's kiss.
